Or are we too worried about the heads of the disgraced? On July 4, delegates approved the Declaration of Independence. Sometimes as the slogans chant on, I feel the pain of the millions dead during the war of our independence. Delegates called for the repeal of the acts of Parliament. The Sons of Liberty threw crates of tea off British ships in Boston Harbor. They banned town meetings, closed Boston Harbor, and forced colonists to let British soldiers live with them.
The British retreated to Canada. After those clashes, armed conflict spread quickly. The tension led to the Boston Massacre in 1770. Some of the great leaders of the time were there: John and Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Richard Henry Lee, and George Washington. A committee that included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson drafted a Declaration of Independence. Colonists began to unite to express their concerns in groups called committees of correspondence. Parliament passed the Coercive Acts. I felt a distinct sense of pride as I felt as though it was my motherland sheltering me in its cocoon.
Britain passed the Sugar Act to try and stop the smuggling. Colonial leaders used the killings as propaganda to build support against the British. The Declaration states that all people have certain basic rights and that government exists to protect those rights. They formed protest groups, such as the Sons and Daughters of Liberty. They say flags are a symbol of nationhood, a symbol of unity, but I would say I was quite unprepared to have foreseen the powerful serene peace I felt over my head as we all stood in silence. And such began my journey to rediscover Bangladesh, to rediscover the spirit of our independence. They say that in a functional democracy, participation, accountability, and rule of law come hand in hand. This rebellion is known as the Boston Tea Party.
