Ironically, just like you would need to if you were actually running a building of this sort. It's possible to play the entire game without building the donut shop why would you want to do that , or set yourself more extreme challenges, like purely focusing on residential property, or creating a high-end hotel. Nevertheless, there were some lovely little details in the game. You have to continually adjust your playstyle to reflect the circumstances outside of your control. Now, just under two years later, the game makes the jump to consoles under the guise of the Architect Edition.

As the architect you must coordinate the construction of everything — every Wall and wire, every office and apartment. The game also offers a handful of tutorials that you can access from the title screen.
As you build your tower, you have five general types of businesses you can fill it with: apartments, offices, stores, restaurants, and hotels. Early on in any game, finances are often tight as you must seriously consider how to spend your money. From the outside, make them as high as the clouds, marvels to be awed at. Little niggles present themselves, like having to use the analogue stick for all movement and menu selection, even when the D-pad would be easier and more precise — because the D-pad is mapped to game speed. Building 3-4 floors, fill them with small offices, a few restaurants and wait until you start making a profit to actually expand.
For example, an accounting office needs an electrical utility closet as well as phone lines so they can take incoming calls. Not for the commercial value it brought, of course. When it comes to presentation, the game is perfectly pleasant. Legal offices want to have plenty of choices for food courts before they move in. The artstyle is pretty basic, nothing is going to blow you away but the details make up for the 2D models. Which results in a game that should be able to run close to any system. It was my dream little corner of a city, in other words, and to cap things off I also put an art gallery in.
Project Highrise is the kind of game you boot up to play while drinking coffee but have a tough time putting down afterwards. That was the amount of time I spent waiting for my small buildings to make enough money to continue growth. I did not come across any situations where, once I got my buildings up and running sustainably, there was ever a danger of losing it. The art style is pretty simple and straightforward with everything being presented in a 2D perspective, though when you zoom into individual businesses you can see some cool little details.
